Noguchi Coffee Table

Isamu Noguchi designed this table in 1944 as a sculpture that happened to be functional. Two interlocking, biomorphic wood pieces support a curving three-quarter-inch glass top; the entire structure holds itself up through geometry and weight alone. Herman Miller has produced it continuously since 1948, with the wood base offered in walnut, cherry, black-stained ash, and white ash. The wood is bookmatched, joined without exposed hardware, and finished to reveal the grain. It's the low table that has quietly furnished the good living rooms of the last eighty years — a piece of art that also holds your coffee.
